Ski Apache Adaptive Sports (SAAS) is one of the oldest adaptive ski schools in the country. The first group of skiers were disabled Vietnam veterans in 1976. Today, SAAS works with individuals, schools, rehabilitation centers, occupational, physical therapy centers and wounded warriors.
Anyone with a permanent physical and/or cognitive impairment is eligible for the program. SAAS has the most up-to-date equipment enabling anyone to ski.
Lessons are one-on-one and tailored to the individual. All-day, morning, afternoon, and hourly lessons are available for skiing and snowboarding. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the office at 575-464-3193. Walk-ins are taken as time and instructors permit.
Ski Apache Ski Resort offers discounted lift tickets for people with disabilities. Skiers or boarders 18 years old and over are eligible for a half price full-day ticket; under eighteen are eligible for a complimentary ticket. Vouchers are issued through the SAAS office. Scholarships and a sliding fee schedule are also available. Call for more information.
SAAS is a private, independent organization that depends on fees, grants, donations, and fund-raisers such as the Silent Auction and Grindstone Run Challenge to stay open. Without the support of the area businesses, the Mescalero Apache Tribe, the Inn of the Mountain Gods, and, of course, Ski Apache Ski Resort, SAAS could not exist.
