SUMMARY:MLK Weekend Ruidoso Sunday Gospel Brunch
DESCRIPTION:It's not only a new year it's a new decade so\, we are celebrating for the whole month of January! And on Sunday\, January 19th Sacred Grounds Coffee & Tea House will be shakin' with some foot tappin' (okay\, maybe a little stompin')...hand clappin'...fan wavin' dancin' live Gospel music!\n\n\n\nIn honor of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day we are hosting another great Gospel music celebration with the popular Blues/Gospel band\, "jamie & aka" (Jamie Estes\, Dave Millsap\, Pete Davis\, Bud Hewett and Joey Everett).\n\n\n\nIt was said that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a singing man. His father\, Martin Luther King Sr. stated his son had a "fine\, clear voice" and was "passionate" about Baptist music. From the Montgomery bus boycott onward\, music was an integral part of the civil rights movement. King had a lifelong involvement in the church and in protest songs. The two came together with historical protest spirituals of the Civil War to produce 'freedom songs'. King once called the freedom songs "the soul of the movement."\n\n\n\nIt was reported that just minutes before his assassination\, King called for a gospel song\, but not just any gospel song. "Take My Hand\, Precious Lord" is universally considered the most popular\, most beloved gospel song of all time. Written by the Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey after the tragic death of his wife and infant child in 1932\, "Precious Lord" continues to be sung at African American funerals. It is simple\, emotional\, direct and profound.\n\n\n\nIn the horrendous days that followed King's assassination when African-American pain often turned to rage\, and vast swaths of America's cities burned\, grief-stricken blacks and whites again and again found solace in "Take My Hand\, Precious Lord." When the massive funeral procession for King from Ebenezer Baptist Church reached Morehouse College\, it was Mahalia Jackson who sang it. "She sang out her sorrow\," Jackson biographer Laurraine Goreau writes\, "sang a plea for forgiveness of mankind\, sang for the soul she knew was sitting at Jesus' side. 'Save me a place\, Martin. Save me a place.'"\n\n"When my way grows drear\, precious Lord linger near\n\nWhen my light is almost gone\n\nHear my cry\, hear my call\n\nHold my hand lest I fall\n\nTake my hand precious Lord\, lead me home "\n\n\n\nThe band will be singing this song\, along with many others you will recognize as foundational to the Blues/Gospel genre. Get ready to raise the roof and shake the floor...or just wave a fan while you tap your toes and clap your hands...however you enjoy lively music...we may even get out of our chairs and do a little dancing. The band's goal for the Ruidoso Sunday Gospel Brunch is to lift your spirits\, eat a scrumptious meal and have a fun time with family and friends(whether we know you or not). Many of you will have out of town guests for the holiday weekend and there's no better way to enjoy the best live music venue in New Mexico\, Sacred Grounds Coffee & Tea House\, then at the Ruidoso Sunday Gospel Brunch. No dusty old hymnals will be handed out but\, the old fashioned hand fans provided on each table will remind you to have a little fun with some of the best old gospel spirituals and yes\, most likely you will also hear the band do a moving acapella of Jamie's favorite song\, "Amazing Grace".\n\n\n\nMountain Entertainment Group for the Arts is a proud sponsor of this popular event and tickets are only $15. Tickets can be purchased in advance for reserved seating at EVENTBRITE.COM.\n\nTickets can also be purchased at the door depending on seating availability.\n\nSacred Ground's mouthwatering Gospel Brunch buffet is included in the cost of your ticket so no more waiting to order\, just show your ticket and dig in...before you dig out on the live Gospel music!
