Name: Friday Night Free Movie at Sacred Grounds
Date: April 28, 2017
Time: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM MDT
Event Description:
The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road. (92 minutes) This Grammy-nominated documentary follows members of the Ensemble as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve tradition and shape cultural evolution. Blending performance footage, personal interviews, and archival film, Oscar winning director Morgan Neville and producer Caitrin Rogers focus on the personal journeys of a small group of Silk Road Ensemble mainstays - Kinan Azmeh (Syria), Kayhan Kalhor (Iran), Yo-Yo Ma (France/United States), Wu Man (China), and Cristina Pato (Spain) - to chronicle passion, talent, and sacrifice. Through these moving individual stories, the filmmakers paint a vivid portrait of bold musical experiment and a global search for the ties that bind. Because we want everyone who is the least bit interested in music to be able to see it without missing some of Open Mic night, Open Mic will be delayed until after movie is finished. From Will: "You will never see a better documentary than this one. If you aren't thrilled to your core, you're wrong." After the movie, there will be a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception for Will and Rebecca's old friends Mary Kogen and Harold Gray from Portland, Oregon. Meet and greet with these fine musicians, formerly the piano department of the Portland State University.
