Name: Fifteenth International Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold Medalist performs at the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts
Date: July 22, 2017
Time: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM MDT
Event Description:
Distinguished as the best among the best, the winner of this summer’s quadrennial Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will shine in the Spencer spotlights just a month after winning the most grueling piano contest in the world.

We won’t know who that person is until early June when the amazing young talent is awarded in a lavish ceremony at Bass Hall in Fort Worth, Texas.

The juried competition, which reaps prestige and lucrative recording contracts for the Gold Medalist, is open to pianists 30-years-old and younger from countries throughout the world. The first phase of the competition took place in October, 2016, and after much culling of the 200+ applicants at recital performances held in the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, New York and Fort Worth, 30 finalist- competitors will be selected and then reduced to an ultimate six who face-off for Gold in 17-days of astounding artistry.

The 2017 winner will be the 15th in the history of the Van Cliburn competition, an exhilarating challenge that was created in 1962 to recognize Fort Worth native Van Cliburn, the young American who won the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War. The young Cliburn returned home to a ticker tape parade in New York City, the only one ever given for a classical musician. (Time Magazine called him “The Texan Who Conquered Russia.”)

In addition to this Spencer performance, the 2017 Gold Medalist will perform at Carnegie Hall and wins three-years of commission-free career management, and a grand tour of solo recitals and concerts with the world’s great orchestras and chamber groups.
